Inuit Study Adds Twist to Omega-3 Fatty Acids' Health Story

常吃肥肉而不生病?你得有那样的基因!

 多数人同意蔬菜水果等为健康食品,而食用大量的肥肉对心血管没什么好处。但经常有人举例说某百岁老人顿顿吃肥肉,身体依旧没有问题。这如何解释呢?最近的一项的研究提供了一条有意思的线索。

其实每天都能大鱼大肉的人并不多,但因纽特(Inuit)人,以前也称为爱斯基摩 (Eskimo)人,由于生活在北极附近,他们的食物仅限于海洋哺乳动物(如海豹,鲸鱼)和鱼类,他们的传统食物中基本没有蔬菜水果等人们认为健康的食品。按照一般的推理,因纽特人得心脏病的应该很多,然而事实并非如此。于是有人分析说海洋哺乳动物和鱼类脂肪中omega-3不饱和脂肪酸含量高,这类脂肪酸应该对心脏有保护作用。这便是我们今天看到货架上到处都是深海鱼油和omega-3的缘起。

提倡高脂肪饮食的人常用因纽特人为例子来说明高脂肪饮食是健康的。但今年九月十八日发表在科学杂志上的一篇文章却表明因纽特人具有多数人不具备的遗传特质。科研人员通过对居住在格陵兰(Greenland)的因纽特人所表达的基因的研究发现,这些人几乎100%带有一组脂肪酸脱饱和酶基因突变,相比之下,中国汉族人中有20%,欧洲人中有2%的等位基因带有这些突变。脂肪酸脱饱和酶参与omega-3和omega-6不饱和脂肪酸的合成,尽管不知道这些突变如何起作用,但实验表明带有突变的人们体内的确伴随着某些脂肪酸含量的变化。

因纽特人所普遍携带的基因突变可能不仅仅影响不饱和脂肪酸的合成,这些突变还伴随着低水平的“坏的”低密度脂蛋白胆固醇和胰岛素,这有利于防止心血管疾病和糖尿病的发生。这些突变还使人平均矮二厘米,体重轻十磅,其中的原因可能是脂肪酸与一些生长调节激素的合成相关联。另外,因纽特人还携带有一种与皮下脂肪分化有关的基因突变,这使他们能适应寒冷的气候。

所以,因纽特人能够顿顿大鱼大肉而保持健康是与他们身上特殊的基因突变分不开的。这是达尔文学说的“物竞天择,适者生存”的一个范例。因纽特人大概是一千年前来到格陵兰的,在此之前这些基因突变就已经完成。在约两万年前,那时因纽特人的祖先生活在连接西伯利亚和阿拉斯加的白令陆桥附近,需要适应以猎物为食的生活方式和寒冷的气候。那些不带有这些有利于适应环境的基因突变的个体都早在那时就被恶劣的环境淘汰了。

因纽特人其实与中国人亲缘关系很近,这从他们的长相(图)就可以看出。那么有相当比例(约20%)的中国汉族人的等位基因带有与因纽特人一样的脂肪酸脱饱和酶的基因突变就可以理解了。相信以后的研究会逐步深入,更多因纽特人的遗传特质会得到破解。根据现有的结果,约有4%的中国人带有纯合的突变等位基因,他们有可能会常吃大鱼大肉而保持健康。那么,你是不是其中的一个呢?你的基因会告诉你。相信人们按基因吃饭的日子不会很远了。那时,看人(更精确地说是看人的基因)下菜碟将成为新常态。

Cindy and Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village

Just now I received the "SFCV Sponsor update for Cindy".  Cindy is a little girl lived in Shepherd's Field Children's Village.

I first ready the story of SFCV in local Chinese website. Then one of my workmates just adopt/sponser a little boy and shared this information.

Then I just click the button and found Cindy. This happened 8 month before, and now I received the 2nd update. She lives not far away from my current city about 4-8 hours high speed train and cars. So maybe next year when spring comes, I can prepare the first visit.
